Really cheesed off. My six week olds were squabling a bit this morning, so I put a known rooster, Oreo, into the coop with the two layers.

The young birds settled down. The two hens were a bit iffy with Oreo. I assumed theyd settle down too. This was a mistake.

Came back to find him in this state.

Pretty sure he's lost an eye but don't want to go poking about. Is there any hope for this boy? We like him.

You shouldnt need to cull him. Hes probably in shock right now. Seperate him and clean the wound. Use Vetricyn eye drops if you can if not on hand you can use saline. Keep him wrapped up with a towel to calm him down. Be sure to bandage the wound to keep him from itching it as it heals. When you introduce him again be sure to do it gradually. If you do it all at once they will reject him and you will end up with this situation again.

Thanks. I've put him in the brooder box by himself. He's pretty calm, not flapping about, just standing like a statue with his head folded back. I don't know if that's a good or bad sign.

How would you bandage the wound? Would he tolerate having his head wrapped?

Place a gauze pad over the wound and then use vet tape to wrap around from the top of the head around to under the beck. Do several layers of vet tape as they will try to scratch it off. Wrapping tightly is not necessary. Just wrap it tight enough that it wont come loose. You may need to do this multiple times as the gauze gets saturated. Keep an eye out for pus or signs of infection and clean the wound once or twice daily with saline or Vetricyn

Get some electrolytes in his water. And clean the wound with vetericyn. I don’t know if wrapping the wound is an option with where it is located, if I were you I’d apply some neosporin- plain nothing pain relief kind as that is toxic to poultry. Not all wounds have to be bandaged I have a pullet who has had much of her neck skin removed and I’ve been using vetericyn, menuka honey and neosporin on it for 2 weeks without wrapping it and she’s slowly healing. Just keep him inside isolated while he heals!

I have not needed to wrap the wounds of any of my quail, and I've had birds that looked worse. Keep him separated, clean, and warm, and he should recover. I use BluKote on my birds, but what you use isn't as important as keeping the wound clean.

He might still have an eye. I have one poor bird that has been beaten up several times. I like him, so I keep introducing him to new birds, and it goes well for a while, then he gets beaten up. He must be a bird nerd or something. Getting back to the point, I thought he'd lost his eye twice, and both times he recovered and he has some scarring around the eye, but still has the eye.

I'm new at keeping quail but just faced a similar situation myself just recently. I have a few roos and everything was fine, come out the next time and notice one with a bloody head and seemingly missing ege. Of course I need to leave for work so I just separate him and the aggressive roo into seperate pens before leaving. The beat up rooster was just standing there and not moving around much. When I came home a few hours late he had the eye open and has been moving around and has been crowing. I think I'm going to keep them seperate a little longer though. Basically you may find that he is doing much better by the end of the day. Good luck!

I had a bird who got pecked a lot worse than that, she survived and got a pinsized scar under her eye. All I did was stick her in a box with food and water, clean shavings. (Also lots of attention from us)

Had one of my 7 week old roos get attacked today. I separated him and he's just sitting recovering. I watched and noticed who the bully was and separated him.

Should I grow out the bully before culling? Should I try to rehabilitate the injured bird? Should I just learn to clean my first to quail?
