Mute Swan family

One of our pairs of Mutes with their babies:

I don't know very much about swans so I hope this isn't a stupid question but why are three of the babies white and the other two grey? Is one color male and the other female?
Very pretty birds!!
 
The darker colored youngster is most likely an English (or aka Royal) Mute Swan; the lighter would be a Polish Mute Swan. It is normal in our experience to get both in a single clutch assuming each parent is of the different varieties. The Polish have less pigmentation in general; feet and legs are a more washed-out gray color and while the beak is still orange it is not as vibrant an orange as that of the Royal.
