What is the purpose of swans 🦢

This is a black necked swan, one of many, in a lake in Pompano Beach FL. There are a lot of them living with various waterfowl there at a retirement village where my mom spent her final years. All the birds seem to get along. They did have 2 mute swans, who were kept separate because they were aggressive to humans. They finally traded the mutes. I think swans are magnificent and seeing them makes my heart happy. Do they need any other purpose?

They need a big pond. We had one in my old neighborhood that was part of a condo complex so it took up the full length and almost half the width of the four condos. I’m bad with eyeballing measurements but I’d say the pond was at least 60’x25’. We loved to go for walks by the pond except in the spring when the female built her nest. Then the male would get very protective and try to attack my dogs. They had to put a tarp along the fence (because of course she nested next to the sidewalk) to keep the male from attacking people. All that to say…I think they are kind of a luxury bird like peacocks. You have to have the right setup and LOTS of space. But then they are lovely to watch and I think the cygnets sell for decent money.

This is a great quesion! All things in nature have a purpose, perform a function (except maybe ticks ). Swans fulfill some part in the ecosystem for sure, in the balance of nature, though we may not know what that is. Do they benefit HUMANS in some particular, specific way? I don't know. It might make a great research project. Why don't you look into that and report back to us?
