Mute Swan population to be killed!!!! Has anyone else heard this?

Isn't it amazing what our tax dollars gets used on? And all the poor familes out there scraping by. If your going to kill off an overpopulated species, why not at least offer some good, such as butchering and selling them,or feeding the needy? But to just put a bag over their heads and beat them sensless is such a waste in the human aspect of it all. Seems on many species of fish, ect, limits are placed on them each year for what can be caught, sold,,so why not open up a hunting season on these swans?

There is a hunting season... 365 days long! They do inhabit the same areas as tundra swan in the fall migration, so people may not shoot them because they don't want to make a mistake and shoot a tundra swan when they thought they were shooting at a mute swan. also, the rules with hunting is that you cannot waste the game, its against the law. swan isn't very good...

Why? Because if they are not processed by a certified facilty and someone gets sick, there will be lawsuits. Who will pay the bills for the processing and the lawsuits. A few years ago, there was a program for hunters to donate food to food banks. It was stopped in several states because of the possibility of the recipients getting lead fragments in the meat. yes, there is abundant data showing bullet fragments can be in the meat, but it was the lawsuits that ended the program. The amount of lead is small compared to paint levels in old houses, but that doesn't matter.

The only decent way I've had it was jerked... I'm not a fan of liver either, so most waterfowl is pretty gross to me. Geese are alright though! And maybe crustacean fed mute swan!

yep, go back to the beginning and actually read all the post. There are several links on here too showing why and how they are trying to control them. This is an old thread that just resurfaced.
Pretty much mutes are super aggressive and destructive to natural habitats and do not migrate. So once a reservoir gets 3000-5000 birds on it, they destroy the ecosystem and run off all the native waterfowl. They are the only this the USFWS is concerned with, which is what they should do. Mutes are not native to the Americas and thus any non native destructive species has to be dealt with. Dont get all upset about it cause they are pretty. We are the problem. They should never have been allowed to get this far before they stopped them. But before you cry too much for them, think of all the beautiful, NATIVE species they kill, destroy nest from, run off, or just eat them into leaving their native areas.
we arent talking about them running out and shooting 1-2 cause they are on a pond, this is thousands upon thousands on single lake systems, WAY too many for any area to support

yep it stinks, but is needed to protect the birds that belong there to start with. Wish they could just catch them all and give them to pen rearing breeders.

But like was said in one of the first pages, say it was something ugly and doing the same thing...LOL no one would care then.
Pretty doesnt justify destruction of natural habitat and wildlife.
