Another good free-range breed is the Dominique, which is known as America's first breed. This breeds looks a lot like the Barred Plymouth Rock.

The Dominique can forage well, is a very good egg producer, and it is average on broodiness. This breed was very popular with family farmers because these chickens are very low maintenance and can reproduce on their own.

Chris, well that Does sound like what im looking for, the Game hens.
I love my RIR...
but I worry about the game birds fighting. especially a rooster,
And there are so many strains to know about.
I suppose if I find a Good breeder they could tell me how pugnacious
their birds are right?

There are alot of hatchery quality RIRs around here, id like to start with the best stock i can within my means.
Have you ever had Buckeyes?
for some reason I'm kind os taken with the idea of buckeyes...
coop's ready tomorow, so I can get my first four hens anytime after that...

Maybe you could cross a Rhode Island Red rooster with some game hens. I think that would make some great free-range birds.

Here's the OP digging up this old thread.
the factor I forgot to consider is local availability.
for reasons too long to go into, I am not going to order from afar.I havent yet found Any buckeyes.

So, I have 3 very nice B Australorp pullets.
I got them at 7 weeks old, they are now around 15 weeks.
Today I am going to get 3or4 RIR pullets.
The unexpected glitch in this plan is, I was given, along with the Ausies, a hybrid rooster!
He's AmeraucanaXAustralorp.
So much for any purebreds this year.
I hope to quaaruntine, then integrate the new pullets. Efore they all go together in the big henhouse for winter.
I,m still interested in buckeye, Chantecler and
english Game hens, but I guess I just need to be patient.
Of course, since Ill be hatching hybrids, if anything, maybe
I could pick up a couple sexlinks...
