My #1 Delaware Boy (PICS/new pics added in posts #28 & #35)

Quote:
It is my understanding that you are not breeding for meat qualities, but for someone who is considering a Delaware for meat, the strong early growth is a big plus -- even if #1 catches up to #2 a few weeks down the line, I'd pick #2 because of the larger size at a younger age.

I understand the trouble with weighing chicken (if you can get them to stand still). My digital kitchen scale only goes to five pounds. A digital postal type scale at Office Depot is pretty expensive (in my opinion) and as you say, bathroom scales are not typically accurate in teh 5-10 pound range, in fact I think mine won't register anything less than 15 pounds. I could weigh myself with chicken and without chicken, but I do imagine a typical bathroom scale is really accurate and precise enough to think this reliable. Not many bathroom scales weigh to the ounce or even quarter pound.

Anyway, if anyone knows of a cheap and reasonably accurate model scale out there, please let us know.

Tim, I hadn't thought of that aspect, the cockerel reaching his size sooner than the other one, obviously because my primary goal is not raising meat for the table. I'm going to ask my neighbors if any of them have a scale that would work for this job and if so, I'll let you know the weights of the boys.

Do you think they'd call the cops if you took him to the post office and asked them to weigh him?

I am really impressed with your Delawares, Cyn. They are just gorgeous!!! It's not gonna be easy to pick your #1 Hunk, is it?
Not that you could make a bad choice with the boys you have now!

You could always let them think you might be interested in shipping him.

Why else would you bring a chicken to the PO?

My gosh, those boys are gorgeous! Your girls are looking good, too, Cyn! I'd love to be able to compare their size to the pullets I have from the hatchery, just out of curiosity. My girls are similar in age, but I'll bet they are much smaller. Can't wait to see your beauties all grown up, especially the boys. There's just nothing like a fully mature rooster!!!

Lori, three of my four girls are large, one especially so. I sold the smallest one to a BYC member--she was my very late hatcher and never caught up in size to the others, but what a sweet girl!

Tracy, yeah, that'd work, LOL! They already know I get eggs in the mail on occasion and I've given them free eggs, so bringing a rooster in to weigh him shouldn't be a surprise, right??
