My 1 week old chicks are pooping alot more!

My 3-week-old chicks are in an old pack-n-play lined with cardboard and pine shavings. We turn the pine shavings every other day. When we get particularly dirty spoonful of shavings, we can throw that in the compost and add some fresh shavings.

[giddyup, I love that picture of your cat babysitting the brooder!]

An old pack-n-play!! That's a great idea. Some of my 2 wk old chicks are starting to fly up and perch on the side of the 13" bin they're in. The very curious RIRs and 1 d'uccle have done it.

Back to the original topic--I'm definitely adding more pine shavings than I was in the first wk. They seem to poop a lot after they have a june bug feast (in April) but they're good at stirring it up when they scratch around. I keep it pretty deep. I think it's time for a bigger place for bigger poo.

She's a cutey but doesn't try to get in. My whippet cross worries over them constantly, coming in and whining until I take one or two out for her to sniff and nuzzle (the computer is right there).

the hounds think they are squeaky toys so are NOT allowed in that room

topic: I tried that yesterday, adding more and flipping and all seems well. Just goes against what I've been taught/doing for 20 years with animal care so it's a bit odd!!

"Stall dry" is a horse product made of DE and clay, made into a granular form. should be harmless if ingested and is an excellent deoderizer. But if you use too much it can get dusty.
