I read the other posts and sounds like many of them sleep on the floor. I have changed the roost where it is about 2 feet off the floor and they seem to like it. The higher one we had they flew too hard and would hit their wings. I made a ladder for a craft project and was thinking of putting it in for easier access to the boxes. 3 of my 7 layers are still laying eggs in the corner of the coop on the floor. How many roost should I have for 11 chickens? The coop measures 10x7 feet. Height is about 7/8 feet high I think.

For entertainment: Also can I add aluminum plates to the coop walls for shiny objects to peck, the cds they're bored with. I'm also going to hang a small hand mirror.

Wintermonths: Thinking all little ahead here but wondering if chickens like to go outside in the winter?

I've heard that chickens should have around 10 inches of space per individual. I have around 36 chickens that sleep in a room not much larger than the size of your coop. They sleep up around the top of the cement walls, on top of the nest boxes (or in them, which I don't mind, though the eggs do tend to get dirty), on the fan that is on the door, on a board resting on top of some fence and on a ladder, as well as sometimes on top of the crate I use for broodies or introductions. Some like to snuggle up to each other, but especially during hot weather mine like their space.

I hope this helps.

Thank you. I am finding them moving the straw to lay on the floor, guess it's cooler for them, although the coop is cool, outside has been quite warm last 2 days. I thought they roosted to sleep. I guess they will sleep wherever they are comfortable. Thanks again for your response.
