My 27 week old EE-first egg hung up outside body in membrane today...

It was hung up OUTSIDE of her body with a thin membrane around most of the egg. I washed her butt off so I could see it better, thought the egg might release on it's own. It didn't. I used my fingers to gently push the egg out the smallish hole area in the membrane. Nothing seemed to be bleeding, just swollen, red and definately OUT OF PLACE. Once the egg (nice smallish pullet egg) was released she left the hen house. It seems like her insides are back in her insides. I've brought her in the house to keep an eye on her. The other 3 hens were NOT picking on her. Any advice? will she have problems laying the next egg or could everything kind of right itself? wow, midwife to a chicken. This is a first oddity in 6 years of having hens.

I would love to hear if anyone has come across this and what the outcome was for the hen.

Thanks so much.

please, somebody, any experience out there with something like this?

I would just watch her. A big plus that everything went back in on it's on. If she is still swollen you can use preparation H ( without pain reliever) on her for the swelling. As to why this happen's..... not sure. It could have just been because it was her first egg.

Thanks everyone, I'll keep an eye on her. I held her in my lap yesterday evening while watching our Smith/Merkley debate. Why do politicians spend so much time sending up smoke screens? I wanted a sense of who each of them was, feel like I just got lied to for the most part. Sorry for the rant, I'm just really trying to make informed choices this year.

Anyway, she seemed happy to sit with me and after 30 minutes of snoozing, stood up and seemed to say, "put me back out with my sisters." So, I did.

I'll let you know how she is today. I'm kind of dreading the next egg.

Okay, the visual of putting preparation H on a chicken butt pretty much cracks me up. Hope I don't have to go there!

She is perky today and running around with everyone else.

Still dreading the next egg. One good thing I think, is that the egg came out whole, without breaking.

My other EE seems to be laying brown eggs. So, this is a befuddling new chicken year for me. Could the auracana have been bread with a chicken that lays a brown coating over the white or in this case green layer of shell? She look a lot like my other EE of the past, beautiful, browns, blacks some gray tones, kind of eagle like. (aside from the cheeks!)
