My 3 hens leave behind a portion of their feed....

A trough with a lip might help. I recommend fermented feed for a number of reasons:

It's super easy to do, and is loaded with pro-biotics to give the birds a healthier gut. The fermentation process makes the feed easier to digest, so the birds get more food value out of the same amount of feed.

It's never billed out onto the ground, so they are not able to waste it. And because it's fed in a wet mash (think cooked oat meal) consistency, they eat it all, and don't leave any of the more concentrated nutrient fines behind.

Your feed bill will go down, because they won't be wasting any of the feed. They will better utilize the feed they do eat, again resulting on less feed consumption.

You'll find that their poop is not as stinky, and not as runny. Their feces will be well formed, and other than the caecal poops, will not stink like it does when they are on dry feed.

You will be much less likely to have issues with rodents, because there will not be feed sitting out in a hanging feeder over night, and there will not be any feed spilled in the bedding to attract rodents.

Your birds will be healthier. My birds have very bright healthy feathers, start laying earlier, lay more often, and have better shell quality than the birds of my neighbors and friends who have birds of the same age and from the same sources as mine.

I'd find a new brand of food - if a feed ration isn't uniform, then the nutritional makeup is irrelevant - the birds are just going to pick and choose what they like - and they're not going to get what they need.

If there is a pellet portion mixed with corn and other ingredients the mill is trying to make a texturized type of feed popular in cattle and sheep feeds. Chickens will sort out the goodies and leave or waste the rest. It sounds like you need to find a different type of feed that will work in your feeder.

Harsh man! I didnt say I was throwing their food on the ground! I have a hanger! They are spitting it out or pecking it out. I was saying I did NOT like the idea of sifting it and throwing it back in! I was asking if the trough method would keep more of it in...?

Please accept my apology! This is the second time in a week that I found my reply on another thread than the one I thought I was replying to. This time, the thread I wrote the reply to, that somehow ended up on your thread, was one on this page entitled, "Throw feed on the ground". The OP was wondering if, since their neighbor did it, then maybe was it a good idea? My reply that ended up on your thread, makes no sense in the context of your thread.

I've got some very frustrating problems with intermittent connection failures, so maybe that's what's causing this. Or I'm losing what's left of my mind. Again, I'm very sorry.
