Funny that you mention that Kathy because today was the first time I have ever seen my peafowl mate. I have had excellent fertility so I guess they mate when I am not around!
Three yr olds usually incubate and hatch. They sit onlyafter laying her entire clutch. The fertility stays intact only for 7 days, it is said repeatedly on this forum.
That is why I am wondering if they are only fertile for 7 day's, how long till she sits, she lay's every other day and I now have 5 egg's, some of her egg's must not be fertile anymore. I am wondering if I should take them and stick them in incubator, I would rather her hatch them.
After 7 days the fertility slowly starts going down. It may not become infertile on the 8th day== based on night temperatures, physical distubance, thickness of the shell, exposure to sunlight etc...may play a role That may be the reason why we see people posting pictures of peafamily with one mother and at most 5 chicks. - not 10 nor 15 chicks.. Some people are lucky to get 30 eggs from a single hen per season. I get -- any where from 10-15 per hen per season. with an exception of my spalding hen which gives me 25 +. The best way is . to take away the eggs laid early- may be the first 5-7 and leave the rest for her to sit and hatch .But we do not know how many your hen is going to lay- only experience tells you
I put a 10 day old egg in the bator and it is in the making , so I don't know what this 7 days stuff is all about, heck I seen them a hen on youtube with seven peachicks and if she did not lay them eggs seven days in a row then how did they hatch.
I read a few articles on "how long can peafowl eggs be stored before incubation" on google web site, mentioned articles were on chicken, turkey, peafowl etc..birds. inculding UPA recommendation. and BYC threads particularly about peafowl On the incubation an article posted by united peafowl association recommends quote " no egg should be stored more than 10 days before incubation " unquote.. . I am not contradicting the experiences of other breeders.. I am only learning. I am saying what I have read for the understanding of beginners. My 11 day old peafowl egg initiated development but quit in the middle. It does not mean that a 15-20 days stored egg will not hatch.. For example; We all accept that peafowl in general lay one egg every other day. But there have been exceptions but rare and uncommon . I agree and accept and learn even though I did not experience.personally.
