My 7 Year old daughter wants to show Seramas.

Ok so after a lot of thought here is what I would do.

#1 Do what Huny says and visit shows, this way you will not invest the money and then find out she does not want to show.

#2 You should get the birds have you considerd hatching some? You also might see if thier is anyone semi-locally.

#3 You can print off teh judjung sheets on the education section of APA youth.

#4 Are thier any other youth shows in your area?

This is just an idea if anyone else says to add or take away anything go ahead and listen to them.
GOOD LUCK!!!

I will try my best to find someone local. But just in case I cant I plan on getting an incubator so hatching some eggs is optional also. There is few shows every year in Dalton, Ga. I use to live close to there. Its close to me too, about 30 minutes away. I can drive there and let her see one of the shows. Although knowing her, she will try to get me to take every chicken she sees home lol. I raised her around chickens all her life. Its only been about 3 years since she hasnt been around any. I had chickens when I was pregnate with her and she would come out with me after just being born in a stroller and watch me feed the chickens and take care of them. As she got older she started helping me. I think she will enjoy showing them too, since she is very proactive about taking care of them. She is outside right now with our dog playing in the back yard. She is a very responcible and animal friendly kid. A lot like me as a kid. She reminds me more of myself every day.

I like that you're letting your daughter choose the breed she wants. Do make sure she knows that seramas are not yet an ABA or APA recognised breed.

You might consider asking her what in particular about seramas appeals to her, and consider getting her a 2nd breed where the birds can progress farther.

I have read that hatching serama eggs can be pretty difficult, that they are far more sensitive to climate change (temp, humidity) and handling than the eggs of most breeds. I've never tried to hatch any, so I have no personal knowledge, but I've read/heard this from several sources.

I don't know a whole lot about any of that myself. I thought they would be like any other chicken or bantam that you hatch and raise. I saw a few awards for them and thought they were showable. Perhaps it's a different organization that reconizes them. I don't know. I will have to look into that better.

She told me that she saw them on the discovery channel or maybe the animal planet. I'm not sure which and neither is she. She said she wanted them cause they were tiny and cute. I think she just likes that they are so small and how they hold themselves.

I actually meant like a local poultry club. For example, Tucson has the Tucson Pigeon, Poultry & Fancy Fowl Club & Phoenix has the Arizona Poultry Organization & I nkow there are a couple of poultry clubs in Utah, and gobs of them in California, and ...
