I am going to die from heat stroke. I can't afford to replace it right now. I mean from what I gather, it will cost about 4-5 thousand to replace. Man am I bummed. What brands have you guys used and what are the prices?? Should I go to like Sears or have a local guy do it? Can I get the unit from sears and have a local guy do it? Any suggestions before I venture into this? Man I am bummed.

What makes you think it needs replaced? Have you had anybody out to look at it? Look in the yellow pages for service in your area and call some of them to see if they can give you a free reapir estimate. From there you can decide if you can afford it or live without it for a while.

Definitely schedule a service call. I had the same problem last summer and it only cost $95ish to have it fixed. Still works great. I can't imagine not having A/C, sorry to say.
I'd say sticking with the local guy will save you $$$ if he's reputable. Ask for references.

Make sure the breaker isn't tripped, that used to happen to mine, and also I just had the fan switch go out, under $10, go with a service call to start with may be something minor. HTH

Thats expensive sounding my mom just had a whole new furnace and central air put in for like 4 thousand.

If you find out it does need to be replaced and you can't do it, get a window unit for the livingroom or bedroom just so you don't roast to death. You can find those for a couple hundred or less.

Don't worry about it - you can live like we do - IN FRONT OF A [email protected]@!
Its been hitting the 90's in our house this past week or so....

When I'm home during the day, I hose off the roof of the house every hour or so - otherwise there is nothing we can do - rental house, no attic to speak of, almost flat roof.... very old!!! VERY HOT!

If you can't afford to get it fixed (like me) take lots of cold showers & sit in front of the fans. Now just don't forget to pay the water bill.[IMG]
Sorry for the pun. We are in the same boat. We move from the Calif. mtns to the New Mexico flat lands & the a/c in our 2000sq.ft. home is shot. It's only going to get hotter here.

    Good luck!![IMG]

Go with a repair man, not someone that sells units. My son repairs units, but he doesn't sell them. If they have a unit to sell, they will. Fix it, don't replace it if you don't have to.
