My alpha hen got attacked

She is drinking.

When she goes to eat, it's like she over shoots it. It's like her depth perception is off.

Going to give her some chopped up egg now to see if she'll eat it.

Sometimes with one eye swollen and closed they can seem to have a hard time picking up the food. You may need to hand feed her for a few days. Some people tube or syringe food and liquids into birds, but if she able to do it herself that is good.

Chickens have good far away vision (see predator) and good close up vision (find food). They are terrible at the in between. I agree holding her food, close and on her good side, will be helpful till the swelling goes down. If she will eat and drink on her own all the better. Keep her hydrated and warm till she feels better.

Its like a lump of a semi soft something. Infection?

Where is it? Is it warm to the touch? Is she upset if you mess with It? It could just be a healing puncture wound.

Its on her back. She was quite calm while i messed around touching it.

Pretty sure a fox put a few teeth in her.

I'm no expert but if it were me I'd try to gently squeeze it. Little warm compress first and see what happens.
It doesn't look red and irritated. If it's not warm I wouldn't think infection. It does look a little pushed up. Not swollen per say but lifted from the surface. Maybe it's several ingrown feathers.

I thought it was bone when i first pet her and felt it. It's definitely not. Looks like maybe some new feathers coming in. How long would that take? Could be that there are some ingrown causing that ball? I'll have to investigate further.


I am happy that she is doing better. She looked really down and was barely eating. Every day she seems to get better.

She's a stubborn lady. She insists on jumping up on a roost near the others, when I'm trying to keep her away from them.
Every morning i pick her up and put her in her own side of the coop and run that i temporarily set up for her before she gets pecked by them.

It would be like an ingrown hair a person would get. You may be able to pick at the black spot and feather ends could pop out. I had a girl with an injury, that around the edges got some ingrown feathers. While healing the feathers try to grown in but the skin isn't necessarily lined up like it was.
It could be the puncture on your girl pushed the feather follicles inward or damaged them.
That's my best guess by the picture. Investigate a little more and see what you find.
If the other birds don't peck her wounds or pick on her you could let her in with them. If they do pester her you could give her a low ranking friend that doesn't bother her. As flock animals they want company.
