The day after Christmas I was moving around some stuff in the attic and found stuck in the floor beams and under some ancient carpet scraps that had been left sometime in the 60's a huge silver platter.

I will take pics but it has legs and some sort of stamp on the bottom that looks like a crown.

It weights 15lbs!!! and is defiantly real silver not plated as my father looked at it.

Now I have beautiful silver left to me by my Grandmother that I would never sell even though I may only use them a few times in my life. But this I have no connection too. It is beautiful and I would love to keep it but I really could use the money.

Now silver is going for over $17 and ounce so I figure it is worth quiet a bit.

I will post pics soon.

I am wondering how I might be able to identify its age and value.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

You might want to look and see if you can find the crown marking on your platter in one of (the many) databases (easily found via google) to see if you have a silver platter that might be worth more than the melted silver prices. Here is one: http://www.925-1000.com/silverplate__menu.html

Failing
that, you could get it appraised at antique or pawn shops (but keep in mind, they want to buy from you on the cheap and sell at a profit) - use the information they give you to make actual inquires into its true worth and avoid getting ripped off.

so at 15lbs at 17 an oz... thats $4o80 worth of silver alone.

Wow- too bad antiques roadshow isn't in your neighborhood about now! You should get it appraised and take it to one of the auction houses in NY. Congrats!

We used to make a drinking game out of it. Every time someone said veneer....and something else I can't remember.
