Is that green iridescent rooster Ameraucana? NICE!! I'm getting hens in the spring but am debating about rooster breed for the following year. I like the looks of that one but want a nice rooster a family kind of guy

Are Ameraucana hens nice / friendly? I'm planning to order 11 of them wondering if I should go with more or less. The other breed I'm going with are Red Stars. I'd Love to know if their eggs are large / extra large?

Yes, he is an Ameraucana, however when you order from a hatchery, you will very likely get Easter Eggers and I can't comment on their temperament first hand since I don't own any of those. These came from a breeder's eggs. My Scout is very, very sweet. I can pick him up and he is completely calm. He's never shown any aggression toward me or my DH at all and loves to eat out of my hand. I can't speak for all and it may help that I handle all my birds from the time they are small, but with roosters, even that doesn't always stop aggression when they approach mating age. Scout has always been very good-tempered. He's close to eight months old now.
Most of the hybrid layers (red, black or gold sexlinks) lay extra large eggs up to jumbo when they mature. I don't have any of those, though.

It's an Ameraucana, no sub-variety. Scout is considered black. He shows iridescence in his black feathers because his base color is gold; the best beetle-green sheened black birds usually have a gold base color, is my understanding. His sire was from the Cree lines out of Washington State, a well-known breeder. I'll be interested to hear the answer you get back, but I can almost bet theirs are Easter Eggers. I'm beginning to believe that hatcheries have completely lost the meaning of the different breeds, thinking the general public doesn't care. Ann, I just looked at their description and this line...

Like their eggs, they come in as assortment of colors.

lets me know they are breeding Easter Eggers. Ameraucanas lay eggs in the blue to blue-green family, never pink, never brown. Perhaps someone who has Meyer's Ameraucana version will tell us what they got.​
