My Ameraucana hen is laying tan eggs instead of blue-green

Quote:
The "blue egg gene" which is responsible for green eggs is not going to show up in the offspring of a brown egg layer unless the roo passes it down. the blue egg gene is dominant so it always shows up in the carriers. When one blue egg gene is present with "one" brown egg gene you get green eggs. I put one in quotes for the brown egg gene because there are said to be several genes that make up brown eggs which is how you get the wide variety of brown shades. So your hens are not carrying the blue egg gene but your roo still might. Any offspring he passes it on to will lay green eggs because they will get the brown egg stuff from the hens.

ETA: That is also why you get brown egg layers out of green egg laying flocks. The stock carries one brown egg gene and one blue egg gene so you can get green egg layers, blue egg layers, and brown egg layers from the flock.

My grandfather in Michigan told me about the ears and egg color thing. He is the one that got me hooked on wanting chickens two summers ago. It took me almost a year to convience my husband we had to more out of the subdivision and onto a piece of land. Then it took me another four months to get him to give in on letting me have chickens. I waited until he was deployed to Iraq for a little while and really missing me so he would give in. I tell him all the time now that I am going to get a nanny goat next! He said no of course, but he is deployed again so we will see.

My EE's eggs look just like yours, speckled and all. She is such a sweetie, we got over our disappointment quickly. Gotta love those puffy cheeks!

I got a batch of Ameracaunas (I knew they would be EEs) from Privett last spring. I think they are not trying very hard in the genetics and breeding to keep good green egg color, I have far too many brown egg layers from the batch. They also had 20% males in the pullets I bought!

I am waiting to see what my Ameraucanas
will lay Im hoping Green -blu eggs
but cant see the ears too well,
they are black inover all color with green-gold
sheen.and the roo is the same.

I did get them from Privett!! Their 2010 ordering guide still says Ameruacana green eegs (mostly). My friend that has three of the pullets says she is getting green eggs so I am very happy for her because her kids LOVE getting the colored eggs.

well I just hatched out 6 EE's from a friend and they were in Green/blue eggs. Well I didnt' hatch them the incu did. Ok so the friend didnt hatch the eggs they hatched in the incu. I mean I've got some talented friends but they can't hatch eggs. I mean my friend gave me some eggs from her EE hens and I hatched them using an incu. Anyhow does this mean they won't or might not lay green/blue eggs. Two are clearly partridge, one is blueish/gray on her back. Oh heck let me see if I can get pic's.
