My babies, dead! I'm so sad.

What is it with these dang predators? Every post I see, including mine, they get our favorite birds. 3 days ago a hawk got one of my black bantam cochins (Okay, this one wasn't particularly a favorite) but the next day my neighbor's evil dachshunds attacked and killed my two silver laced wyandotte cockerels and "Butter" aka "Scruffy" our beautiful and loving frizzled cochin. The cockerels were maturing beautifully and both would come to me and bow up to my hand and peck my fingers, it wasn't mean it was just a fun game we played. The frizzle was my daughter's absolute favorite. These dogs ripped them apart and would have gotten more if I hadn't happened to come outside and interrupt the massacre. Most people don't understand the attachment we have to these birds. I do and I feel your pain.

That's so sad. I am sorry about your birds too. I am so grateful that we have this website, becuase like you said, most people just shrug their shoulders and say so what. I am lucky (I think??) that this was the first time this happened compared to what our neighbors have been going through. I care about all of my birds, but little Egg Drop was a runt and I handled her every day and fed her from the time she was just a few days old. They are all 29 weeks old, but she was always the "baby" because of her small size.

I knew that predators would be a fact of life as a chicken owner, but I still wasn't prepared for how bad the fox attack would be. I think that their run and coop are Fort Knox, but they will never be safe while free ranging.

OP, sorry about your birds. I know how you feel, I have received news on several of my former birds who have been killed. Try not to beat yourself up; if we could see into the future, we would most likely sit huddled up in the corner of our bedrooms and never come out.

But how wise we would be, eh.

Each animal has his/her own path to walk, just as all of us do. Can't walk it for them. We can only do the best we can.

That happened to me this spring, we aren't allowed to have roosters here, so when we ended up with one, I re-homed it to a friend of mine who lives out in the country. Neither one of us knew you can't introduce just one bird into an established flock, well three days after being let out to free-range with a flock of 6 hens, they trampled and ate him. I feel like an idiot for not thinking about that and not researching how to introduce new birds.

and to make matters worse, their entire flock, originally 25 birds, is gone now thanks to hawks and wild dogs

That's so sad! I'm so sorry you lost your little feathered babies. It's always so hard when you lose your babies; especially the favorites.

I hope that you never experience this again.
