When I take it out to dump the overflow I will take some good pics of everything and how it all goes together and start a new thread for it

Walmart garden centers and other places carry mulch rings made of recycled rubber. They have a hole in the middle and a split so they can be placed around a tree. The hole can be made larger for larger trees. I had a problem with chickens wanting to roost on top of the waterer (galvanized double wall type). They'd poop in the water, and they wouldn't have fresh water until I made it out there the next morning. I got one of the mulch rings and put it on top of the waterer. The hole fits around the handle on top, and the split allows me to overlap it slightly, contouring it better to the pointed shape of the top. It overhangs the waterer and slopes enough to divert any poo down to the edge, or at least keeps it from landing in the water.

which one? OP's original AND WONDERFUL!! idea for the duckie babies, or the one for the waterer? Works VERY well. They can still manage to fling shavings from the coop floor into it sometimes, but at least they're not able to "drop bombs" into the water now.
