My Baby Chick cant walk what do I do?

One of my chicks had spraddle legs. She couldnt walk. My friend hatched two chicks for me, Cockleburr and Chicory. We put on a hobble on Chicory made from yarn and tape.

1. We tied a loop around both legs leaving space in between the limbs.

2. Then we placed a piece of tape around the yarn with enough space for circulation.

It should help the chick stand and eventally you can take it off.

my chicks are on shavings and have been since i got them. mine enjoy carrying pieces of it around so the others thing it got a treat...causes chaos is the box thats for sure!


My chick was fine after a day, althought im still worried about her...she doesnt seem to be growing like the others.


i would try the bandaid thing before giving up it may work....anything is worth trying

My last hatch I had a bantam cochin that shouldnt have hatched in the first place his air cell was down the side, but he hatched. Then he couldnt walk, legs spread out in front of him. He was very weak kept his head down and slept mostly. This went on for 3 days. I would give him sips of electrolyte/vitamin water by wetting my finger and let the drops touch his beak. Finally told DH if hes not better by the next morning or dead cull him. The next morning he was uo running around like nothing happened. He is still a little smaller than the others but doing fine. They are 3 weeks old now and yes he is all roo! I named him Miracle but guess I need to change that to Milagro now that I know he is a he. Keep trying the vitamins for a bit it may help.

I got some splay leg bands off Ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Splay-Leg-Cor...es_Poultry&hash=item1e61116547#ht_1465wt_1139 They're basically elastic bands with a piece of plastic in the middle they are so easy to use and don't get as messed up as plasters can. I always have different sizes on hand so I can just whip one on if needed

Culling as young as possible is much easier than doing it later on. You may bawl your head off, you might throw up (I did both the first time I did a chick), but if you have to end suffering then you have to do it.

Well the chick is healthy but its like he is deformed. His legs stick straight up he walks on his hocks. I cant just kill him I put food and water out for him and I will see what happens. I may try taping his legs to see if I can get them to grow straight.

I am giving this one a try I have a 2 day old chick she spent one day in the incubator one in a cardboard box above the gas heater she has one leg that is just stuck and spends most of her time on her back she also had a big poo stuck to he so I washed her to remove it their is lots of fluid at her rear end not sure what that is but at least she can toilet now poor dear.
She seems to bounce on her good leg and it puts her on her back even with this bandaid splint.

I'm having the same problem but it's with more than half of my chicks! They cant walk they just crawl where ever they go. There feet are open but there legs are always behind them and they cant even sit on them. What do I do!

I think I have the same problem with my three day old chick.
Gave it the spraddle leg treatment but he or she is not walking.
It walks on it's knees and has its legs folded up.
Is that your chicks problem?
