My backyard flock of outdoor pets

A year ago last spring, my mother and I decided we wanted to have our own source of fresh eggs. She lived on a farm for part of her childhood during the late 1940's and early 1950's and has many fond memories of her experiences with the various farm animals her family owned; in particular a duck named Donna that thought she was a chicken (I loved those stories growing up).

Now, my house is a far cry from being on a rural farm setting, but I do have one acre of land that it sits on. So, last spring Mom and I decided to get us some backyard chickens (which unbeknownst to us as the time, the hens tend to lay faster than we can consume). So, we go to tractor supply and pick up 4 hen chicks and on impulse, added two ducklings to the mix.

To fast forward a bit here, as there are valid reasons for every decision we've had to make over the course of this new adventure, our small operation turned into 6 chickens, 2 Dewlap Toulouse geese and 15 ducks.
