My Bantam Leghorn screeches for an hour or more before laying.
I am very concerned she is in pain as the egg moves through her body, the sounds she makes are that awful.
Prior to laying she is restless and doesn't eat. Once she lays she is quiet and eats.
Has anyone else heard of this? I can't imagine her going through this every day for years...it would seem cruel.
It is really upsetting hearing her, not at all what I was expecting, and certainly no "egg song".

I would assume she's a new layer. I would bet the screeching will stop or reduce in the next couple weeks. It's possible that the cold is causing some troubles. Some birds can get egg bound from the cold.

try putting a little vasaline on her vent the night before , if she still keeps screeching it could be something more than just passing the egg. its worth a try anyway, good luck
