My barred rock honks like a goose.

I have a barred rock that makes a sound like that - one of 8 siblings makes the sound. Mine are 3 and a half months now. I too wondered if it was a respiratory thing, but she seems very healthy!

Maybe there are just random chickens out there with oddly shaped sinuses that make them honk? I have dodgey sinuses and constantly sound nasal when I talk, could be the same deal?!?

I have three Rocks and they are all making transitional sounds...sometimes still peeping, sometimes clucking. One of my favorites, Brucie, makes an odd sound...when I come near or if she is sitting with me she makes this almost plaintive whine. It's really cute. It is fun to see them changing and becoming big girls.

My barred rock girl is 10X louder and more vocal than my RIR roo! She chatters, she WHINES alot and she honks.
She does this thing like she sings and gets the others/roo involved (not an egg song, Just for attention or something bc none of my other breeds do this) ...
super loud* bok bok bok Boiikkk, Boiikkk, bok bok bok, Boiiikk ...meanwhile she she's nowhere near a nest and is not trying to lay...
I think they are just a loud breed!

Both of our 1 yr old barred rocks are quite the talkers with some honks thrown in for good measure! We also have a 1 yr old EE who honks while chasing me with the treat bowl. Our newest honker is a 14 wk old buff brahma. I predict that she is going to be the loudest of the flock as well as the biggest!

I my barred rock does that to.

I have a 3 month old black orp that honks all the time . If I let them out she runs beside me honking away until I go inside.

I've become partial to my honker. She's quickly becoming my quirky favorite. Now that I'm over the "wonder" of whether it was normal, now I just think it's cute and endearing. Her honking makes me smile
