Old thread but I wanted to say thank you! This has been extremely helpful as I too have been a bit disappointed and disheartened with my first couple of eggs from my BCM, having heard that the "first eggs are darkest and they get progressively lighter". IMO these aren't even a 3 in natural light. Keeping my fingers crossed that a similar darkening progression happens for my "pet"/"hatchery" quality girls, but I know it's not a guarantee for them
