Hi, thankyou for getting in touch and the complement on my coop my husband will be pleased. I did start off with hay on the floor of the coop for the chicken's to rummage around in, but I found I could keep it cleaner without it. I sweep it out everyday sometimes more as I don't like dirt or untidiness.Welcome to the BYC!! That is a gorgeous coop! If I may suggest, a couple bags of pine or hemp shavings dumped on the floor of the "run" will make clean up and maintenance SOOO much easier. Helps with any possible smell as well![]()
Welcome to BYC!!Hi new chicken mum here and loving every minute of it. I have 6 ISA Browns that are doing so well and are laying 6 eggs every day. I have wanted chickens for so long, so now my husband has built a gorgeous coop for them inside a large aviary.
I sweep it out everyday sometimes more as I don't like dirt or untidiness.
The coop has a wooden floor with 2 layers of lino on top which is what they poo on. Every morning it's swept out and washed and put back when it's dry. It keeps lovely and clean as they don't go in there any more after they have finished laying. I even put sprigs of lavender in there to make it smell nice and make it relaxing for them. As for their run they only go in there to eat during the day as they are roaming around the garden all day so the floor doesn't get that dirty. Just a few poops here and there which I pick up straight away. It might be a different story if we have to go out and leave them all day, it might be a bit messier then. Their poop it put in a barrel with water to fertilise the flower beds and veggie garden and everything is going crazyfrom Central Texas! I had to laugh a bit when I read this because I was just like this 2 1/2yrs ago with my first 3 ladies (a lot has changed since then, lol). Maybe instead of hay you could use pine shavings in their coop, it will help keep the moisture and smell way down. What some of the others were saying is to put some kind of substrate in your run (grass clippings, leaves, wood chips, mulch) it adds enrichment, helps compost the poop, helps keep bugs down, and if you garden turns into a rich addition to your garden beds. Not to mention, much less cleaning, because nature is doing it for you, then you can spend more time with your ladies
Just a few things to think on.
