My beautiful rooster... had to give him away. :(

The reality for roosters is that there simply are far more hatched than can ever find positions as flock husbands, pets, or breeders. In a mixed flock the ideal ratio is 1:10. And in many flocks, like some of yours, there are no roosters at all. So there are "job positions" for about a mere 10% of them. The other 90% really have their purpose on a plate.

Since there are already many handsome and gentle roosters going to the chopping block, it doesn't make sense to keep or try to re-home an aggressive or low-quality rooster. It's always great when you can find a job placement for a special rooster you cannot keep. But often, especially when you're advertising on a free site like Craigslist, you'll find takers who want free roosters for their table. Some folks don't mind, or adopt a "don't ask don't tell" policy. I will always tell people my plans for the unwanted roos they offer to me, but many others will lie to your face, telling you whatever they think you wish to hear.

If you can't find a good job placement for your unwanted roo, at least look for the folks who you believe will give him the most considerate handling up to the end, and be the most appreciative of him at their table.

than ks for that, sunny side up. I know you are right...guess I want too much: to not have him but not have him killed/eaten either...which is unrealistic. I don't like the craigslist option and if some one is going to take him to eat him I DO want both honesty and compassion for him up to the end and have the end be quick. Having only 4 birds makes it hard to think about his demise but cannot have him attacking like this (though he only attacked one who was at the top of the pecking order. he seems good/sweet with the other 2 and they seem to want to be near him).
I don't know. I guess we won't do anyrhing unless we can find someone to either keep him or eat him. we can't do either.

For those of you looking for considerate hands in which to put your unwanted roos, try the Where am I? Where are you! section of the forum. You might be able to find some other BYCers in your area who could take them, perhaps even have a job opening for them away from the table. You could also, excuse me, try the Meat Birds, Etc section. There may be some BYCers there who would really appreciate the roos you can't keep.

Ive gotten rid of most of mine on craigslist, BUT I charge something because any tom dick and harry will take a free Anything ! And I kinda feel the people out to make sure they still arent going to be a meal, but who really knows. Luckilly I do have a guy that will take any of my xtra roos and he Does not kill them, he lives on a 70 acre farm and lets them do their thing. So first I try to sell them and if that doesnt work they go live on the farm.

Ive been lucky this year all my extra roos went to good homes where they get to be roosters not food at least all but 2. Most of the ones I have rehome call once in awhile to update me on how they are doing. Dont know if this year will be the same. I tell them if they are going to be eaten treat them good til the time and dont let me know. I just rehomed a Delaware rooster that I really didnt want to but I had too many and one needed to go, he went to a farm with 19 girls. When the guy picked him up he was very impressed with him. Was glad to have such a good rooster.

Thanks for this thread made me realize why I started this chicken adventure to begin with. The first roo my dad gave me is some kinda oegb x RIR small in size but the girls dont really like him. THe other roo he gave me he got from a lady who needed him to leave her home it is a large blk ameriacana nice looking roos ,all of them , but toooooooo many to handle what I wanted them for. The problem is who do I make mad my dad or DW ............?

I know the feeling! my rooster just learned to crow about an hour ago! luckily the neighbors arent home from work yet..we live in the city and arent allowed to keep a rooster....if any one complains, we would have to get rid of all of them!!!so i put a call in to someone who can take him from me, but the kids will be upset...they are attached. anyone in WI want a gold wyabdotte roo?
