My husband and I have a good start on building a new coop for my birthday. We have had really hot weather here in California with temps in the 100's. It's been hard to get anything done with this heat!

The inclosed area is 5 ft tall, 8 ft wide and 3-1/2 ft deep. And the whole coop is 8 ft tall. We built it with ventilation in mind. In the winter, the temperatures seldom get below freezing, but summer highs can be deadly when nearing 110 degrees like it was yesterday.

The floor is going to be made of hardware cloth to allow the poop to fall through and to be raked up. The "open" floor will also help to the ventilation. I also want to add a “shutter” that is hinged and/or removable for the winter months to cover the 2'x8' wire window on the front of the coop.

We still have a lot of work to do with the access door, floor, nest boxes, roosts, pop door and of course the roof. We’ve built it on our driveway because the nice flat surface made it easy to keep things square.

Here are some more pictures: we got the roof on and the door finished

We still have to do the floor, roosts, nest boxes and pop door. We sealed it with Thompson's water sealer. The chickens won't get to enjoy their coop for a few weeks so the coop can "cure" for awhile. We are in the process of buying a new house and want to move the new coop first to set it up.

Once we move it to the new place, we are also planning on adding a 8 ft wide x 6 ft long covered extention off the back to increase the shelter area for the chickens. That way in the winter they will have more covered areas to roam in wet weather. And of course we have to build the fenced run too

Thanks!
My chickens should be happy to finally have a decent coop

I just wish the weather would cool off a bit. During the day the chickens have been hanging out under water misters all day long trying to keep cool in the temporary pen. They are in the shade, but it's been soo hot!

I'm also from Northern California and love open coops with a lot of ventilation. The whole front of my coop, about 5' x 8' is made up of two hardware cloth doors. I also built a shutter that I close during the winter as we occasionally have snow and/or heavy rains.

Your chickens are lucky to have misters to help cool them down! Here's hoping for some cooling weather...

Looking good.

We're in Cali, too.

We got the frame up on ours yesterday, but only worked until 11 am, as it got up to 109 here! Agh! Terrible!
What sort of wood did you use for the siding? It looks nice, and appears that lots of air can move through it. Our babies are almost 8 weeks and still in my house. I am trying to figure out how to get them out ASAP without cooking them!

My husband asked what I wanted for my birthday and I told him a chicken coop. He didn't believe me at first. LOL

We live about 100 miles North of Sacramento. It was about 109 here yesterday too.

We building the coop out of cedar fence boards and panels. I know cedar isn't good for chickens to breath the aromatic oils. But we decided that because the coop is so open that there should be no build up of "vapors". It's only been up a few days and if you stand in it you can barely smell the cedar.

My Barnevelders that are 10+ weeks old are doing fine with their misters and being in the shade, but I have two younger EE chicks that are not doing as well with the heat. I still have to keep them seperate in a lower cage area of my mini coop. It has a wire floor and one open wire side, but they are still panting a lot. Yesterday I added a large tray of really wet sand and a frozen 1 gallon water jug. They seem much happier and are not panting today.
