Found Gilbert my black rooster with a wound a few days back. Not sure how it happened, unless he and Big Red got into it. He's my other roo. The girls wouldn't leave it alone. We put a dog crate inside the coop with his own food and water. I cleaned it the best I could and applied local honey. It had a good scab on it so I thought it would be safe to let him roam with everyone today for a couple hours. Big mistake. I feel like a horrible chicken mom now. They pecked it all open again. How long do I need to keep him separated to heal ? I have been giving him supervised visiting the past couple days and no one pecked at him. Today without me being in the run they ripped it back open. A chunk of skin is gone. How long does it take to grow back?

I would use chlorhexidene with water or Vetericyn wound spray on it until it scabs over again. Plain neosporin ointment is very good as well. Once it scabs you can use either BluKote or the pine tar to hide the wound and discourage pecking. But pine tar can be very messy—think tar.

sorry I havent been about to get a picture. He doesnt want to hold still while I hold the feathers away.
Hope this helps. I just took this pic.
