2 of her three chicks became seriously ill. I took them away. That was in early july. NowI let her out of her cage and released about 15 motherless chicks, including her recovered two, 20 chicks with hens, and 18 keets in her (huge) coop. She is a mother to all the chicks. At night, I will find her witha huge crowd of chicks and guineas around her. She is doing so well. One of the other broody hens has been picking on her, but that will stop soon. That evil hen may be out in the cold, all alone if she keeps picking on Samantha.
Ok! More updates! This morning, I gave her a half hatched egg because the mom wasn't taking good care of it. It hatched and so she has two chicks! But wait! Theres more! The same mom that wan't taking very good care of the egg had two other chicks. This afternoon, I found one dead and the other wounded. I treated the wounded one with neosporin and put it under Smantha becaus eshe is the only hen that won't peck its wounds. And now I can't get her to eat again! Before I made it as loud as I possibly could, but now that isn't working! She has only had one meal in the last 2 1/2 days! I have tryed everything from putting her feet in the food to bringing in another hen to make the pecking sound of eating food. i know she hasn't eaten because he crop is full of water. I dumped chicken food in the water, making a mash, so hopefully she will get at least a little. Finally, here is a picture that I took yesterday before the other chicks came. I don't have anything newer. I had to delete several pictures to get enough room to add this: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/23256_p1010013.jpg
