My blue wyandotttes don't have yellow legs, are they something else?

Ooooh, I want to see pictures!!!

I was wondering about doing the same thing with my BLRW x BW's. I bred my BW rooster (sadly I lost him to a Bob Cat) to one of my SLW hens and got a Blue Silver Laced roo (good yellow legs) and a surprise Blue Laced Red/Gold pullet (gorgeous lacing, odd color, more like a lemon blue?) I'm keeping her as a pet she is so beautiful! I plan to breed the BSLW roo back to my lighter blue BW hens in hopes of getting some Lighter Blue Silver laced birds for my Lavender Laced Wyandotte project.

Blackdotte,

I am sorry I must have misspoke...I have a line of LF Blacks that are not crossed with the Blues, I did use a Black rooster to improve my blues, but my Blacks are pure black with no crossing with the blues, I do get some blacks out of my blues, but I dont use them on my LF Black line of birds..hope I am making sense here.

My Blues do not have a green sheen, they are flat blue or slate colored...I do admit that I did get a black rooster with mahogany red in the hackles last year, which wouldn't be good to cross on the blues, but all the old wyandotte breeders keep telling me to use the black cockerel with red in the hackles on my blacks in the breeding pen...

By the way, how is Raf doing on the BLRW this year?

encorepistol, glad you like your chicks...

You can still have sq ( Schwartz is German for black, I have forgotten what q was) Matt Black in Black birds, it is a sex linked recessive.
By the way, how is Raf doing on the BLRW this year?

Well as far as I know

I wish the show pic was better. 2011 Champ American Florida State Fair. Class of over 60 birds. I noticed many blue Wyandottes lack distinct lacing on every feather. Blues must have this.

P.S. Soft feathering is disasterous to a Wyandotte. Soft feathers = bunny tails

The only Blue chickens I have ever seen with that "true" dark blue lacing around each feather are Blue Andalusians. I have never seen it in any other varieties of Blue. Most others seem to have a nice blue color but lack the distinct lacing, including Blue Wyandottes.
I know there has to be a genetic reason as to why the Andalusians Blue is much better and the others are not but I do not know why. I suppose if someone wanted that true blue color you could cross the Andalusian blue into your variety but that would be a very long term project to short term depending on what you want to cross them with. Into Wyandottes there would be some major obstacles of leg color, comb and earlobe color.
Sorry, just rambling on here.

It is VERY common for feed/store/hatchery birds to have the wrong leg colour. While breeders work at meeting the standard in all areas, hatcheries are predominantly interested in production--both multiple birds, but also egg laying and meat production. Leg colour really does not affect production.

just a little update on leg color since this thread was brought back to life..... Here is a picture of a 2010 pullet and cockerel in the breeding pen.....they are in the breeding pen so the pullett looks a little worn.

but they both have great leg color. We culled heavily for leg color in 2010 while keeping an eye on type, color, size and lacing. We have great leg color on our breeders and this year we will concentrate on lacing and size. When culling the blues you don't want to breed the blue hens that have black legs and feet. They should at least have yellow on their feet and some yellow showing through on the legs. This is where good breeders and raising a ton of chicks comes into play. Lacing can be added to the blues by crossing a pure LF Black Wyandotte (not a black from the blues) on your line of blues
