You know it really depends on the dog and the level of allergy. She is itchy as it is but as soon as flea season starts it's flea meds and an steriod shots. Last summer we had such a heat wave that the fleas didn't survive but she got hot spots which became infected quite easily which resulted in an overnight stay with iv meds, then a course of meds, a steriod shot, blood work (negative for lyme), and a bath. She was so sick that they didn't even have to sedate her for the bath. She is terrified of baths. She was itching again weeks before she could get another shot. This isn't my first rodeo with an allergic dog. We had a gorgeous Belguim shepard when I was a kid that had severe allergies and after a long course of treatment had to be put down. I just hate seeing this happen again and if my girl gets to the point he was I'll have to make that same sucky decision.
The temps got better midway through Oct and she was as happy as a clam bouncing around at feeding time but she started refusing going for walks or started pulling toward the house after one time around. Now she hasn't walked for about a month but was doing fine in the yard. Then we got that cold snap over the weekend and yesterday she was very stiff and wobbly. I would hate to have to make her a house dog because that will mean regular sedation for baths. I love that gal but she is the smelliest thing and it only takes about three weeks for her to get a good stink going. I'm chuckling as I think about her stinkyness because I've had several dogs since childhood (we always had 5 to 7 dogs when I was growing up) and this girl has more stink to her than any dog we've ever had.
Oh and one thing about the aspirin the vet said only for a couple of days because it can cause damage if taken longer.
