My boys and I are raising baby chicks for the second year in a row. We love it! I ended up with one chick this year that was NOT on the list! Once I figure out how to post a pic I will. We were wondering if anyone might be able to help us with breed identification. The body is a wonderful coffee color (light brown), there is a black stripe that starts where the comb will form and goes all the way down to its rear end. The stripe is narrow in some areas and wide in others. There are also two little black marks around the eyes. They surround the eyes and form a line from the eyes towards the back of the head. Its a beautiful bird so far. We would just feel better knowing WHAT it is. We have looked up pics and found a couple breeds that look sort of like ours. They are Sicillian Buttercup, Golden Wyandottes, also Partridge Cochin. In short, our bird looks like a chipmunk! Please help if you can. I will figure out how to post a pic in the mean time (i am a computer moron!) ~Thanks, in advance, for any help!! Jenn

There are actually quite a few breeds that look like chipmunks as babies.

Look at leg color, comb type, etc to get a better idea. Light brown Leghorns are one, phoenix, I think is another, among the ones you mentioned.

Good luck.

Did you order from a hatchery? If so they sometimes include a "free rare chick" in your order, more often than not a roo chick. If I had to bet without looking at a pic, I would say its an EE chick.

Does it have feathered feet? If not, its probably not a partrige cochin.

nope, no feathered feet. I just ran in to see. My hubby and I dont know what an EE chick is. Sorry, still new to chickens. Thanks for the quick responses!

It sounds like an EE from what you said, which might explain why it doesn't exactly fit any description. I ordered 26 EE's from Ideal. Absolutely beautiful. They all looked like chipmunks. But, as stated, there are several breeds that look like chipmunks, my RIR did at first.

What a fun surprise!

oh! I actually already have two EEs then! ha ha, never knew. They lay blue/green eggs. My son names then "Pretty Girls". My baby chick is alot less red than the ones in the pics above. More brown and the stripes are very very defined. My hubby is sick of me trying to describe this lil one. He has gone to take a pic and post it one here for me. I did look up the light brown Leghorn and mine looks alot like them. We shall see. We will update with pic soon. Thanks guys!

Just be aware that EE's come in every color imaginable, so just because your's is a different color doesn't mean its not one. On the other hand, there are a few other breeds know for chimpmunkiness, so the pic will really help.
