My daughter and I went to the farm center today to check out the chicks that had just arrived this morning. They had two large containers of ducks, a container of bantams (assorted straight run), and a container of Barred Plymouth Rock and Ameraucana Pullets. We had no intention of buying any chicks just yet, we just went in to watch them for awhile because they are so cute. After a brief while we left and went down the road to an appointment, then decided we really wanted a couple of Ameraucana chicks. We went back to the store, and less than an hour after we had been there the first time, the bin that held the BPR and Ameraucana chicks was all but empty. There were only two BPR chicks and one Ameraucana chick left out of the huge quantity that had been there only one hour earlier. Of course, we couldn't resist taking the three lonely looking little girls home with us!

Since we weren't quite prepared to get chicks just yet, we had to promptly go and pick up all the supplies we need to take excellent care of them.

So...now we have officially started our little flock family.

I guess I better get moving on finding/building a coop and run before they are ready to move outside.

We plan on getting three more chicks in the very near future, likely two silkies and another Ameraucana. I am completely in love and addicted!

Can someone tell me how to upload my photos so I can show off my new girls?

We bought a large clear plastic container, lined the bottom with an absorbent (disposable) underpad (instead of paper towels), placed a red heat lamp above one corner of the container, and showed them their food and water. They seem to be very content and do not appear distressed at all. They have each had a few bites of food and some sips of water, and appear very comfortable. I don't currently have a lid on the container as the side wall are very high and they are in a warm, draft free location in the house with us. I plan to get some type of wire material to place over a cut out area of the lid so they can't escape as they get older, but I'm not sure what material to use. I welcome any advice on how I can best raise these girls...so please feel free to tell me your experiences so that i can be a great mommy.

You can upload pictures under my page....and then go to that picture and copy the direct link and place it in your post.

These aren't the best pictures, but at least you can get an idea of how cute these new little girls are! My daughter has named them Miku, Yuki, and Hana.
