My budgie is eating lava rock??

Yeah, I’ve even read some saying it could harm them!? Which scared me. But then some go against that generally accepted view and say they eat it in the wild or need it or whatever and it won’t kill them like people claim. I’m not convinced they need it but I don’t think it would kill them hah

And that’s understandable 😂🤣 mine have been so loud lately LOL

Yeah, this is exactly what concerned me. Some people say that they feed their birds grit and they were totally fine, others say their birds ate some grit, lava rock, etc. and died.

But, would an animal ingest something like rock if they didn't feel that they needed it for something?

Yeah it can be so confusing! Everyone has different opinion on anything!! And I think they would! Or maybe even didn’t mean to swallow it? I know one of my brother’s dogs literally swallows toys 😂🤣

She’s oddly actually a very very smart dog otherwise but will chew and eat even huge whole pieces of fleece from a tug or rope from a toy or whatever. so they don’t really give her any anymore LOL I made the mistake of playing with her with a fleece tug and she ate 4 strips of fleece off it :th

I was so worried since I know about blockages and everything but oddly, she has pooped every single thing she’s eaten out! There were whole strips of fleece in her poop 😂🤣🤷‍♀️
Anyway, so YES! Sometimes or even often animals will eat things they don’t need 😂

Haha, yeah, but dogs are entirely different. They will eat anything. They no longer have a natural sense of what is good for them and what isn't. You know what I mean?
But budgies seem more wild, to me at anyway, so I feel like they might not do something like that, at least not with natural substances like rock. I don't know, maybe I'm completely wrong about this. What do you think?

Yeah that makes sense! I figured you meant birds but just figured I’d say it anyway haha 🙈 and I’m not sure, maybe? But honestly they’ve been bred in captivity for so long now, I’m not sure they necessarily would. They’re not wild caught AFAIK and even in big flocks, they’re still being fed etc. so I’m not sure they would know. Kind of like how most domestic chickens would not survive in the wild anymore since they’re not jungle fowl or whatever.

Yeah, I know what you mean (and yes, I know they are not wild caught :)). And like I said, I don't know if what I said is true. It was just a thought, but you're right, they are very domesticated at this point, so maybe their natural instincts about what to eat are mostly gone now too. :idunno

Sorry, didn’t mean to imply you didn’t know that or make you feel bad or anything  I was more just meaning I bet they’ve had the instincts bred out by now but then again maybe not since I doubt they’re really selectively breeding for anything ?
