Our coop's run has chain link fence on the back side facing a construction storage lot. There are tangles of trumpet vines grown in to the fence. I locked the birds up tonight and noticed are 5 year old cat was snuggled up inside the run. She is a good cat and I didn't think it would cause any trouble so I left her in there. About 20 minutes ago, I hear this god-awful yelping coming from the back yard. My son's bedroom window has a direct view of the coop and he heard/saw the whole thing! Dog came sniffing around and put its nose where it didn't belong. She must have got 'em good too as we could hear the dog run off yelping the whole way.

She just came in to tell me her side of the story. This cat just keeps getting better and better.

That is great!! I've tried to get cats to stay in my coop, but they won't.

I think my chickens are too rough on them. Congrats on having a great cat!

I had a Dalmation once that defended my (his) cat. My mom and I were walking in the garden, jsut checking on stuff, and my momma cat was following along behind us. Suddenly this mean tomcat appeared out of nowhere and jumped on her and starting tearing her up! Before my mom or I could even take a step to help, my Dalmation came rushing over, the two cats were rolling, tumbling, clawing, and screaming. Pepper waited until the tomcat was on top, then reached down and snatched him up by the scruff of his neck, shook him real hard, then just threw him through the air! That cat hit the ground running and we never saw him again! It happened so fast, my mom and I were just standing there with our mouths open! We were so proud of Pepper! We petted and loved on him and bragged on him for days! He was such a good dog. He is dead now, but I will always remember his heroics to defend 'his' cat!

I've got a good guard cat too. Little yellow thing that stays in coop/miniature horse barn. She goes to the pasture each day with the minis, but if she's in the barn she watches over the chickens. She won't let the kittens hastle them and I've even seen her stand up to the turkeys if they get too close to the chicken side of the farm!
