Hello! Brand new chicken owner here. My three girls are coming up on five weeks or so. All three are eating and drinking and pooping as usual. They’re all active. The other two are friendly as can be and looking very feathered. My Black Star, however, is a little less social (she’ll hop on your arm but doooo notttt pet her) and also looks like a mess. Her little neck is super bald. It doesn’t seem like anyone is pecking her, she just looks like a weirdo. Is this normal or is she doomed to be bald necked forever?

Sometimes when chickens are depressed they go into self-mutalation where they pull out their feathers. If this chick is acting less and less social it may be time for some more outdoor time. Or it’s just molting, which is probably the case considering it’s not a large area and their age isn’t certainly the molting age.

Oops, I mean is the molting age

I had a BSL pullet who hatched with one flank totally void of down. She took a very long time to feather in there, but when she did, she was absolutely gorgeous. I think this is the case with your gal. She'll be fine... eventually. She's at that awkward ugly duckling stage.

Are other chickens pulling feathers out?
No one is pulling feathers from what I can tell, just the occasional peck at one another when someone has food stuck on their face. I took them outside today to give them some extra excitement and they seemed to enjoy that. Their brooder has perches and toys (they are super spoiled) so hopefully that will keep them from getting too bored.
