My americoona chick(Odin) got an eye infection while she was relativley young and now(five weeks later) her eye is sometimes all the way closed and sometimes her eye is open with a guasey substance spread over it! I don't think she can see out of the eye. We have been swabbing it with water but it does not seem to be getting better. We think that another chick may have pecked her.
Any suggestions?

I would suggest the old timers use, a cup of tea. Make a cup of hot water, soak tea bag in it, let cool to touch, don't want to burn the poor bugger! After its cooled or add cool water- strong tea (salada for instance) and dribble it down over her eye. The tannic acid will clear out most infections on cats, dogs, kids and adults.

If it doesn't show signs of getting better, even over night or so, go to feed store and pick up some terramycin ointment for eyes.

Good luck to you and your bird!

Thank you so much!

my chick is alos a little slow growing, sort of like the runt. I'm glad that your chick is allright and good luck!

You are all so very welcome. I swear tea can be used for many things, from skin (rash) and eye soothing (for man and beast)
If a child has a belly ache, sometimes sitting down with warm tea will move gas.
Black coffee and tea CAN help asthma, used to me. The caffine will help open up the lungs, warmth will slow down the panic. NOT to be used in place of asthma meds, you can use it with.
Also the tea can be hot or cold, share it with someone you love, it will slow you down long enough to communicate.
Tea, whodathunkit!

(popcorn works too!)
