Heres the scoop. Well, my silkie muma is hatching chicks, she has been sitting on them for a bit, 2 days ago one of them hatched! A beautiful yellow chick with black around her eyes. Well today, I was looking at her, to make sure she is full grown into a chick, and has all her bod parts, well I was looking at her back and noticed a almost microscopic white bug on her, I was like ew, must of came from the wood in the coop, or somthing. Well, after 2 hours I was getting worried about it, I looked at her again, and she has a HOLE army of these 1 x 2 sized white bugs All over her! On her back, on her bum, on her neck, on her head, on her legs, stomach, beak, around her eyes in her nous, in her ears! They are like coming from inside her! I am getting very scared now, because I dusted her with a ear cleaner, I dusted her with the dust that kills all chicken bugs and such, I waited 3 hours and There was even more!

Ever more tiny! Now there is tan, white, and cream! Sense she is only 2 days old I am REALLY afraid she will die from theses bugs! She is also very tiny, tiner then the normal new born chick, she is very fluffy so I think she is a silkie, I've never seen this before! I looked it up and my computer came up with nothing! I was thinking by how small they are they might be fly larva from all the poop in the coop! I was thinking maybe they came from the mothers stomach! But I can't check because the mother is laying on the other 3 eggs! Can someone PLEASE! o please help me!?! Does anyone have any idea what this is?

If you do Please reply! I am almost shacking how much worry is in my head!

Have you seen any blow flies around? It sounds a lot like a major infestation of them..they are usually around dead things or dieing/injured things..lots of info on them on the net. They lay their eggs which turn into maggots then the adult fly
Hopefully I'm wrong.Hard to tell with just a description so best for you to look it up and see some pics
Good Luck

Nope, don't remember having any blowflies around here, allot of normal house flies and just plain normal flies though, they get in the coop time to time, but they don't "bug" the animals, I took another look, and the bugs have legs, tiny, tine little legs, I had my friend look at them, and she says there chicken head lice, she took the mother, and the mother has them ALL over her stomach, head, and well, body! My friend said, she sorry but there is a 31 out of 100 chance the chick will live, we can't treat the mother, because the dust will go all over the eggs and chick and kill them, I'm very stuck on this, does anyone know what to do? Or any treatments I could use? That don't kill the eggs and chick.

you need to treat all of your chickens, including your broody hen NOW. Use sevin powder from your feed/gardening store, or poultry dust (pyrethrin) from the feed store. empty out the boxes, change the bedding, powder the broody box as well. I have not heard of the powder harming the eggs- but a heavy lice infestation will kill your chicks, and can kill adults too. Help the hatchlings, worry about the eggs later. You need to retreat in 2 week, and thereafter inspect weekly to keep this problem from getting so bad before noticed.

Ish! The duckling that my momma duck left in the nest has fly larva all over him too, but once I got hims OUT of the shell and wiped him off a bit they disappeared and werent a problem. I would just remove as many as you can and keep her in a clean place for a bit till shes ok.

Thank you! But, will the dust/powder kill the hatchling?!? The mother as said has it all over her body, I didn't treat her because I thought the chick would eat the dust/power and die, or get it in her eyes and be blind! My friend went to the farming store 5 minutes ago to get feed for her chickens, I just called her on her cell and asked if she can find any of this, she said she'll try as fast and as best as she can!

Bring it inside and wash it under warm running water in the sink. If you have dog flea/tick shampoo, use a very few drops. Keep the head out of the water, and raised so that water drains away from the head. Wash until all the mites/lice/maggots are gone. Wrap in a wash cloth to help dry. A hair dryer set on low can be used, just be careful to not get the baby too hot.

Mama definitely needs a bath too, even if all you have is regular shampoo--it will at least wash away many of the bugs. The eggs will be okay for a bit, but I would bet that the infestation is centered on mama hen, and her nest.
