I had one do a very similar thing the other day. The more I tried to see what the matter, the worse it got. I thought maybe the vent was plugged internally as the abdomen was full and round feeling. After he passed I did an autopsy (an old labor&delivery/er/surgical nurse). I found his heart was bigger than his liver and everything was being crushed by the pericarditis (fluid around its heart. This was my first and I hope my last. Nothing you can do for the most part except treat with antibiotics and catch it in time, still not guarentee.

Sory for your pain and the chicks

Thank you guys. It's been a rough afternoon. She died about ten minutes before my kids got home from school.

We will try again after we get done grieving (my husband says I have a tender heart- I guess so since I have spent the last hour crying over a chicken).
In the meantime we will create a better setup and we will definitely get more than one.

This one was a gift and we were unprepared. Won't happen again.

Anyhow, this board was delightful for the few days I was on and I hope to see you all again soon.

PS. You have truly been the warmest most welcoming message board I have ever participated in. Thank you.
