I went to a chicken swap today and found a Black Jersey Giant chick bought it went back to the car and sat down with it, and it was trying to cheep but made a half peep half wheez sound so I asked a lady that was there what might be wrong with it so she checked it out and said it might just be trying to make a big girl noise and that nothing seemed to be wrong with it but after she has a good sneeze she can peep just fine so I dont know if she is sick or what

thanks

You need to be VERY careful with this chick, and the possibility of disease introduction to your flock. Swaps are notorious for having sick chickens, sometimes they may have a latent illness that is brought out by the stress of moving, other chickens etc...This poor chick will have to be in quarantine for at least 3 weeks before introduction to your flock (IF she is healthy). Quarantine is kept FAR away from your flock. Unfortunately, she is going to be very lonely during this time (that is why new birds should be gotten in twos). IF she appears fairly healthy, you might want to put in one of your flock to keep her company, with the knowledge that your are putting that chicken at risk. IF she is not healthy (sneezing, discharge, eye goop, lethargy) I'm afraid you might be best off culling her, as you don't want to introduce that disease even if she recovers. Keep her separated, and keep us posted on her condition.

From what I understand it could be many things. Keep her away from the rest of flock. You can look up respiratory at these site. I think sulmet might be the best med to put her on. (I found this on other forums and that is what they said)

I hope someone with more knowledge can help you and good luck!
