My chick pipped the side 24 hours ago with a small hole. It made some progress by getting it's beak through the membrane a few hours later. It has since stopped making progress. Still breathing and small chirping. I'm not sure when or if I should assist.

It looks like your chick is backwards in the egg. With no air cell to maneuver in, that youngster will likely have a very difficult time breaking out. Keep an eye on the membrane to make sure it doesn't dry out. That becomes a deal-breaker for a weakening chick. You can moisten it with a faint mist of water, but be careful not to get anything inside the egg or you may drown your little one - it doesn't take much.
Many people are dead-set against assisting, but if the option is clearly a dead chick, I'll help out a bit. I'll remove any fully cracked pieces being held on by the membrane or the chick's wet feathers. The idea is not to fully open the egg, but to weaken the shell just enough for the chick to finish the job on its own. Go slowly; go gently and watch carefully for broken blood vessels. If you see fresh blood, you'll need to stop. Let us know how it goes!

I’m not sure of time frame for chickens but I hatch ducks
When they hit outside the air cell you have to add air cell time to the hatch
This is his internal and external combined
For example of ducks
Internal -24 hours
External 24-48
So if they hit outside the air cell the time is now 48-72 hours to hatch
I know chicks hatch faster then ducks so you will have to get that info

Thank you! It definitely got turned around, I'm thinking one of our other lil ones knocked into it after it went into lockdown. I've been watching and keeping any exposed membrane moist with just a lil drop of water on my finger. I have the humidity up in the incubator. I will keep you posted.

We've finally hatched after almost 40 hours! I did have to break away some shell as the chick cracked it, but chick broke free from membrane and pushed shell away on its own. 24 hours later, we seem to be dealing with crooked toes and still struggling to stand and hold head up. Any suggestions?
