My Chicken Broke Her One Good Leg

She's gone.

She made it through the surgery fine. My vet had a tech sitting with her afterwards. She fluttered then fell forward. They tried to resuscitate her, but could not get her heart started.

My heart is broken.
I am so so incredibly sorry sweetie. I can empathise, lost one at vets too. Anaesthetic and chickens doesn't always work but it's a risk we take to make sure they have every chance. You did all you could and she was loved to the last.

This is heartbreaking news,my condolences. I know you thought she would come through surgery just fine, like the first time. Surgery should not have gone this way,but unfortunately sometimes it does. You were "mom' to her,you hatched her, cared and loved her,8 years is a long time. She knew she was loved, this above all else is what matters. While this does not help your pain in anyway, know that we have all had to endure this agonizing pain, and that we share it with you.

I am sorry for your loss. I know from experience what it is like to have a chicken die, but its worse to have one die when you have raised it from so very young. Hope you feel better soon.

She lived a good life, 7-8 years compared to the 18 months battery hens get to live to in darkness.
Though sad and depressing to hear what happened, you did all you could.

What interests me is if they actually still charged you for the surgery even though she passed in their hands.

Thank you for the condolences. i love all my critters, but Guinevere had a special place in my heart. i knew the surgery could be risky, but we had to try. She could not have just laid there in her cage, propped up on towels. Although, i was concerned about how i was going to make her comfortable and function-able after the surgery.

tonhoogstra - not sure what the bill will look like. My vet did the surgery, and then everything she could to save her. She is really good to me, and many times does not charge me for everything she does. Then they give me the 10% off everything discount for being old. She also lets me pay over time for things. So, whatever they charge me i know will be fair.
