He hurt one chicken really bad...he sliced open the back of her neck , she almost needed stitches.

I would kill that rooster before the night is over.

Absolutely a rooster could kill a hen without drawing blood. A cockerel of that age can be very rough with hens. What kind of rooster is he and how old was the hen?

He's a sliver laced Wyandotte and he's what I consider huge. They will be a year old in May and he's two. I've kept him separate since last summer but I've never seen him be aggressive to the Buff Orpington's. He hates the other SLW and she screams and runs from him if by chance they get together, but she was a bloody mess from him attacking her. Normally he does that little dance to the others. All the buffs are submissive to him. I immediately thought he did it...there were feathers scattered around her body but then he was dragging her dead body around and trying to mate her.

I considered it but decided to give him a chance..everyone said he needed more girls so I got him more girls. And now one is dead and he was at the crime scene.

Agree. You’ve already given him a second chance, by the sounds of it. If you can’t trust him with your hens, then why keep him? I wouldn’t even want to breed him for his offspring. Unless he is an exceptional quality show bird, there’s no point, and you are only risking further damage and death to your hens. It is of course up to you...

It would be best to necropsy your hen, and I also think that this rooster needs to be gone. Invite him to dinner, or send him off to feed another family.

I have a silver lace and he is really good with the girls. He is to big to jump really high and doesn't bother chasing them.

Do the other hens peck at the chickens he is mating? My older girls peck at the younger girls. They actually hurt the ones head and I had to take her out of there. She would cry as they pecked at her--just awful.

If I had a rooster that was mating a dead girl, he'd dead 5 minutes after I saw it. What are you gonna put up with? the roo is NO GOOD.

Basically what I was wondering if a rooster could kill a hen without drawing blood. Could he have flogged her to death with his wings, or stomped her to death.

There would still be some signs of trauma if he flogged or stomped her to death. I highly doubt it was him.

This should be an indication to you that he would have left some sort of damage to your hen.

That being said, if I had a rooster that was so rough on my hens, I wouldn't keep him around. But that's another matter altogether.
