My naivete is showing but, do they kill them before swallowing or go down live like a snake? How would a chicken digest a whole mouse?
I would think they would take it apart before swallowing? So very sorry for the gruesome questions.

Oh, wow, I've heard that chickens rarely choke on anything at all. I recently lost my first last month due to a mistake I had made and was totally responsible for.

My sick roo was in the basement getting treated for a Respiratory Infection and I left a feeing cup in his cage. I found him the next morning with his head clogged in the cup.

I'll never get the image out of my head, nor the thought that I was to blame.

I'm so sorry.

Oh, I'm so very sorry for your loss. Yes, I knew they ate mice. I can understand how, if it was bent around, the mouse could have gotten stuck. Poor girl!

Mice are good protein; I'm glad she went out doing what chickens do, and not due to illness or a predator.

Im sure that the reason she choked was because she wanted to make sure she swallowed it before the other birds got to her. They were still pecking at the tail hanging out of her mouth when I got there.
