I'M NEW TO BACK YARD CHICKENS BUT I HAVE LEARNED A LOT FROM THE SITE. I WANTED TO KNOW WHY MY HEN DROPPED A NARROW, LONG-ISH, CLEAR IN COLOR SACK. I'VE HAD THE HENS FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS NOW AND HAVE BEEN GETTING EGGS DAILY. STILL GETTING EGGS BUT FOUND THIS LITTLE YUCKY, SLIMEY SACK ON THE GROUND.

Probably just an egg hiccup. It will happen from time to time. If you are feeding a good layer feed and have oyster shell available, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. :)

No problem! Keep on eye out, but you probably won't see it too often. My girls just started laying this spring, and I've seen three or four soft-shelled eggs. Good luck!

Your chicken had a soft shell egg break inside, and although it happens commonly, it can cause a bacterial setup for egg yolk peritonitis in a year or two. You can flush out her vent with a couple of teaspoonsful of weak white vinegar 1:4 and a syringe to get rid of any residual egg material. I lost a hen last year in which whose vent I pulled a soft membrane of an egg out of a year or so before.

Is it not possible that the chicken died not because of the soft shelled egg, but because of a disorder causing the soft shelled eggs in the first place. Infection sets up in way way less tHan a year. Newcastle disease causes soft shelled eggs and usually death later.

The chicken didn't die but I will read up on the disease....Thanks so much for the info.

I have found 2 eggs within a
400
week under the roosting bars that have been hatched with a sack like consistency of a balloon. Is this something to worry about? Pictures attached
