Hello everyone, happy holidays to all. I am a follower of the group but never posted before, I have gotten to manage fairly well my small flock but now I have a chicken that have one eye closed because of how swollen the surrounding tissue is. Some boogers seem to come out, but not much. Don't seem to have cough, she still moving well, but I am afraid her right side of her face is going to burst. Does not seem to be pus, looks more like fluid. I did Vet rx inside her beak and around her feathers x 2 days but don't know if is working. Anyone has any idea what this might be and how to treat it?

PIctures would help. It could be infectious coryza, a respiratory illness that can cause facial swelling. Also could be infection from an injury to the eye. VetRX is basically vicks vapor rub, so not likely to really help. I would flush the eye out really well with some sterile saline or eye wash, get any pus or debris out (pus will be firm and white or creamy colored, not liquid, more like a cheesy consistency), and get a look at the eye. You can use plain neosporin, or terramycin eye ointment (many tractor supplies carry it) in the eye a couple of times a day. I would check inside her beak and throat also to see if there are any lesions or plaques there.

Thank you so much. This really helps. I will try everything you said, and post a picture too. Thank you!

It took me a while, today is a busy day. This is how she looks. I flushed her eye with saline and tried to pushed fluid out. It came only watery old blood then clear but still very swollen. I did Terramycin ointment in the eye. What you guys think? She was fine but right before I cared for her eye, started to puffed her feathers and standing in one foot. Maybe she was in pain?

Poor thing looks very tired. Is she having and trouble breathing? Is she drinking fluids? Can you get Tylosin powder or Tylan 50 injectable? Those can treat mycoplasma or MG in chickens, a chronic respiratory disease. That one as well as coryza can cause swollen eyelids and eye drainage.

She is drinking and eating well. Breathing well, no cough, nostrils are clear, That's why I am puzzled. Yeah she is tired though. I'll look for the med, most likely hard to find in California. The pic is before I got some of the fluid out, it got better, but I'll see tomorrow. I did it before she went to sleep so she may rest. Thank you much. Will post an update how she is doing. She is usually bubbly, very smart, loving, and works hard, lays eggs everyday (when not sick) her name is Ramona. I love her so much!
