My Chicken Flock and new Chicks (Photos)

Thanks, Don. To answer your question, I chose black cochins for several reasons. First I think they are beautiful birds. In my opinion, the black cochin is the best looking variety of the cochin breed. In the sunlight, their black feathers have a really nice greenish-blue sheen. Secondly, they are very docile and friendly birds. If handled often when young, they are not skittish at all. And they get along well with one another. They are good egg layers, are eager to go broody, and make very good mothers. They are heavily feathered so they are well suited to our winters in this part of the country. I think they are a wonderful breed, and have been very pleased with them since starting my flock a couple of years ago.

VERY nice looking birds!! I just got 2 Buff Cochins(hens), They are 9 weeks now and starting to look like little blonde beach balls! I love em, and wish I could get more! Great looking coop too! Did you build it ground up, or did you convert a shed! I like the short run. Is is hard to get them inside without being able to get inside and round them up?

Cochins are a great breed. To answer your question: yes, I built the house from the ground up. The chickens have 24/7 access to the pen. In other words, the "chicken door" into the pen is always open. They go in at night to roost on their own. I've only been in the pen once or twice, for cleaning, since it was built.

Beautiful!

Thank you. Yes, I eventually move the broody hen along with her clutch down to that boxed in area. However, I currently building an additional 4ft x 8ft pen (breeding/brooding pen) to the left of the chicken house where the broody hen and future clutches will live seperately from the main flock.
