My chicken, Gracie, died tonight.

You clearly loved Gracie and were doing EVERYTHING you could to care for her. I always think it's somehow my fault when a chicken dies. But as previous posters pointed out, sometimes, despite how much care you give and how much you want them to live, they still pass.

And, @janiedoe is right. It's not at all likely that Gracie's neck was broken; I can't think of a hen I've lost that didn't have a floppy neck at the end. You didn't break her neck.

Gracie was lucky to have you as her person. Be kind to yourself.

So sorry. It truly is a helpless feeling to suddenly lose a pet chicken. Take time to recover, find your center, and continue on.
 
I lost my BO a few months ago, to reproductive issues. You have my condolences on your loss; I know the feeling.

You did nothing wrong, as others have said. You likely prolonged Gracie's life by draining the fluid, and I'm sure she appreciated the time with you. Try to remember that she is now free from pain and illness. :hugs

Oh I am so sorry. :hugs You didn't break her neck I'm sure, during the process of dying.the body becomes contorted, limp in some areas, stiff in others. Ascites causes internal leakage and infection in the cavities of the body and this is what kills. Many of us have lost birds to ascites regardless of draining them. Again, I am so sorry, always heartbreaking to lose them. :hugs
 
I am just grateful you took such loving care above what many others would have done. You're grieving at present, which is to be expected. That is the cost of love sometimes. Your love was not just a word, but an action. Take heart, you did your best for your beloved Gracy. I am quite like you, so with a heavy heart, I send you my condolences for your loss.
