My chicken is falling to the side

My baby was put to sleep today. Vet said she was going to die slowly and while suffering, and that is was best to put her to sleep. It was a hen. Today she could barely walk, she would fall over to the front or to the side. She was still eating but literally laying down. Her feet started to curl already. I know she was in pain. I’m very saddened that she is gone, but she was suffering a lot. Did I do the right thing to put her to sleep? The doctor kept her, they were going to cremate her.

Yes, euthanasia was probably the right thing to do, but the vet should be doing more than cremating the body. A necropsy performed immedately after euthanasia could have told you and your vet what was making the chicken sick and it could have implications on the health of your remaining chickens.

I’m sorry you lost him. Who told you it was a pullet? They were wrong. He has male specific feathering. But, no matter what, he was loved, and you did the right thing. Hope you feel better soon.:hugs

The vet said it was a hen. But either way, we loved it very much 😔

Yes, he didn’t suggest it. And I was thinking clearly, and didn’t ask about it. Now I only have 2 hens left and a rooster. Hope they live a long life. Thanks everyone for your help and support.

Vets are no good at sexing, unfortunately. There was no way it could have been a pullet. I know it’s hard, but you set him free from his suffering. His life may have been short, but I’m sure it was the best one he could have ever lived.
