Hi everyone,
I’m new here and I need some help and quick. My chicken is very ill she eats and still drinks but is so weak I have to help hand feed her. She is not spunky like her normal self and I have had two other chickens that passed away from the same thing and I don’t want to lose anymore is there anything I can do? She has went to the bathroom and when she did it was a turbo poop. When we went to take care of my babies this morning she was on her back so we brought her inside and started to care for but she isn’t getting better!! I need help! I love my feather babies!! Sincerely chlobug25

Welcome to BYC. How old is this chicken, and how old were the two that you lost? Is she having runny poops with mucus or blood? Is she lethargic and looking hunched or puffed up? Is she walking okay? The more details you can give the better we can.

She is less than a year old maybe 9 months and the other two that passed were way younger like 6 months and I havnt seen any bloody poops yet I’m observing her now and havnt seen any stools!! Her walking is definitely of she has just been laying down in a box we have for her feet are like curled but she’s not latching on to anything! She’s definitely a lot slower moving and like kinda spaced out but very exhausted almost!!

Curled under feet can be a sign of riboflavin (vitamin B 2) deficiency, but also can be a sign of Mareks disease, a virus that can cause paralysis, skin and organ tumors, and blindness. I would start treating her right away with some water up to her beak, getting her drinking, give some electrolytes, and start some chicken vitamins with riboflavin listed on the label. Human vitamin B complex can also be given 1/2 tablet crushed over food or given orally in the back of her throat. Poultry NutriDrench does not have riboflavin. Keep her in a box near food and water. If it is a viatmin deficency, hopefully you will see some improvement in a few days.

Thank you so much I will try to keep posted if any symptoms occur thank you so much I’m so very appreciative!!

Mareks is usually fatal, especially if they do not eat, so offer her wet chicken feed often with extra treats. Water is most important. I really hope that she does not have Mareks disease. Mareks is best diagnosed after death with a necropsy by your state poultry vet. The body would need to be kept cold, not frozen, and here is a list of state poultry vets:

Here are 2 good articles to read about Mareks disease:

Thank you so much eggcessive and I’m definitely trying to get her to eat as much as she will allow including treats and smaller foods she won’t have a hard time swallowing. But she will eat partially on her own but i havnt seen her drink on her own so I give her lil by lil in a syringe. I will definitely check those articles out because I have more chickens I don’t want getting sick

It looks a little greenish, probably from not eating much. If she will eat watery feed, you can get more water into her. Can you feel of her crop and tell us is it is empty and flat, full, firm, doughy, or puffy? Usually chickens her age would be able to tolerate coccidia, but if she would have Mareks, that can affect their immunity to something like coccidiosis. She really needs the B vitamins right now to see if it helps her curled toe paralysis.
